The first time I ate at this place left me feeling bad for the guys. The next time made me never go back. I walked into this dumpster smelling shanty of a room adjacent to a Folly Road surf shack and proceeded to have a truly third world dining experience. And seriously, the room smelled like the inside of a wet dumpster. During the thirty minutes of waiting for two burritos, I also noticed a roach infestation problem. Apart from the ridiculous wait (thirty minutes for 2 tiny burritos), the environment was so terrible that my friends and I decided to leave. Up until this point, I had never walked out of a restaurant in my life.
How could this happen? How is this place in business? Does the staff notice the trash smell? And finally, how do they have an A rating? I really feel bad for these poor guys and wonder if they shouldn’t just stick to selling weed. Also, though it’s almost of no consequence, the food sucks as well. Wait, I did have one good thing; amazingly, the grouper fish taco. Pero que podrida eres tu, La Cocina!

This is absolutely the best blog about anything i have ever experienced. And I don’t even live in Charleston, SC and couldn’t give a shit about what people eat there.
Comment by Jenny Binstock September 6, 2006 @ 4:19 amI have mixed emotions about this food blog on La Cocina. Here is a guy trying to create a business with nothing but hard work and determination. Yeah, the only location they could find was a busted up ex antique store turned surf shop. They have to buy groceries everyday with the money they make from the night before. Sorry your spoiled by Charleston’s gourmet roots but everyone has to start somewhere.
I personally love eating at La Cocina, I think the food is extreamly delicious. I admitt it may make me a little gassy, but isn’t that what Mexican food is supposed to do. I love the atmosphere, its downhome and personal. If I wanted quick service I would go to taco bell, but some of us are just a little wiser than that.
I suggest to anyone who reads this that they should form their own opinion and stop in and see JV & Lucus and enjoy a gourmet borrito from La Cocina.

Comment by rottenoysters October 12, 2006 @ 11:39 pmI’m sure these guys have worked hard to build the place and i appreciate that though i still stick by my criticisms. If I knew them personally, maybe i would feel differently but i was truly disgusted by this place and feel like I gave it a fair chance by visiting it a few times. Thanks for your comment anyway and for sticking up for your boys.
I have to agree with the review–i’ve never been more disgusted by a restaurant experience in my life and i have an iron gut.

The third world experience part may indeed be true, but that is one of it’s many charms. The part about slow service is the polar opposite of my experiences there. the staff is friendly and laid back….

Comment by sean cab February 1, 2007 @ 2:33 amTHIS CUTE LITTLE MEXICAN RESTURANT HAS BEEN CLOSED!!! The hippies took off, $3,000 in the hole, and the took the juke box and piled up in their vintage VW van and are traveling across america to cheat landlords into setting up more scandelous mexican resturants. Watch out! They are laughing all the way to the bank, dreadlocks and all!
